Lab 12 Flashcards
Joints and Sutures
What are ligaments?
Ligaments are strong, fibrous tissue that connects bones to other bones while stabilizing and supporting joints.
What is the function of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)?
It prevents the tibia from sliding too far forward relative to the femur and stabilizes the knee during rotational movements.
What is the function of the posterior cruciate ligament?
It prevents the tibia from sliding too far backward relative to the femur and provides stability when walking downhill or on stairs.
What is the function of the medial collateral ligament?
It provides stability to the inner (medial) side of the knee and resists forces pushing the knee inwards.
What is the function of the lateral collateral ligament?
it provides stability to the outer (lateral) side of the knee and resists forces pushing the knee outwards.
What is the function of the medial meniscus?
Absorbs shock on the inside of the knee.
What is the function of the lateral meniscus?
Absorbs shock on the outside of the knee.
What type of joint is the knee joint?
The knee joint is a hinge joint (allows flexion and extension).
What type of joint is the hip joint?
The hip joint is a ball and sockets joint (allows for flexion, extension, and rotation).
What are the Atlas and Axis?
The Atlas (C1) and Axis (C2) are synovial pivot joints.
