Lab 10 Flashcards
Eye & Ear
What is the function of the retina?
The retina detects light and converts it to signals that the brain can use.
Retina = Detector and receiver of light
What is the function of the sclera?
The sclera protects and supports the eye.
Sclera = Shield for the eyes
What is the function of the cornea?
The cornea focuses light.
What is the function of the lens?
The lens changes shape to focus light on the retina.
What is the function of the pupil?
The pupil controls how much light enters the eyes.
What is the function of the iris?
The iris controls the size of the pupil.
What is the function of the optic nerve?
The optic nerve sends visual information to the brain.
Superior Rectus
Moves the eye upwards (controlled by the Cranial Nerve II (Oculomotor Nerve)
Superior = Sky (upwards)
Lateral Rectus
Moves the eye to the side (controlled by the Cranial Nerve VI (Abducens Nerve)
Lateral = SIDE EYE
What is the function of the tympanic membrane?
The tympanic membrane (eardrum) vibrates with sound waves and converts them into mechanical energy.
What are the ossicles?
The ossicles are made up of the malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrups).
What is the function of the malleus?
The malleus (hammer) receives vibrations from the tympanic membrane and sents it to the incus (anvil).
What is the function of the incus?
The incus acts as a bridge to transfer vibrations from the malleus to the stapes.
What is the function of the stapes?
The final ossicle, the stapes presses on the oval window of the cochlea to transmit the mechanical energy that was produced by the tympanic membrane to the inner ear.
What is the function of the cochlea?
Recieves the mechanical energy from the stapes and converts that mechanical energy into electrical signals through hair cells in the fluid-filled spiral
What is the function of the auditory nerve (part of the vestibocochlear nerve?
Processes the electrical signal recieved from the cochlea and transmits them into the auditory cortex in the brain.
What is the function of the auditory tube (eustachian tube)?
The auditory tube, also known as the eustachian tube balances air pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane to ensure proper vibration. Makes our ears pop by equalizing the pressure between the outer ear tissue and inner ear pressure. The auditory canal does not transmit sound but ensures proper vibration.
What is the function of semicircular canals?
The semicircular canals are used for balance and spatial orientation.
What is the function of the vestibulocochlear nerve?
The vestibulocochlear nerve is responsible for balance and hearing.
