what are hemolysins?
A
exoenzymes associated with pathogenic species of Gram-positive cocci such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. there are also Gram-negative bacteria capable of production hemolysis

what do hemolysins attack?
A
the cell membrane of the RBC and can be detected on blood agar

alpha hemolysins
A
partially break down the RBCs causing a greenish appearance

beta hemolysins
A
break down RBCs completely and result in clear colors

what is blood agar?
A
TSA with 5% sheep blood
