How long should you check HR for?
10 seconds
What are normal HR/BP/O2 for an adult?
HR: 60-80
SBP: 80-120
DBP: 70-80
O2: 97-100%
What are normal HR/BP/O2 for a child?
HR: 80-100
SBP: 80-100
DBP: 50-60
O2: 97-100%
What are normal HR/BP/O2 for an infant
HR: 120-140
SBP: 60-80
DBP: 40-50
O2: 97-100%
Where do you listen for heart sounds in the aortic area?
2nd intercostal space close to right sternal border
Where do you listen for heart sounds in the pulmonic area?
2nd intercostal space close to left sternal border
Where do you listen for the heart sounds in the tricuspid area?
4th-5th intercostal space by sternal border
Where do you listen for the heart sounds in the mitral area?
5th left intercostal space near mid-clavicular line
What is the S1 heart sound?
lub-dub: closure of mitral and tricuspid valves
What is the S2 heart sound?
lub-dub: closure of aortic and pulmonic valves
What is the S3 heart sound?
lub-dub-dub: normal in children, pathological in elderly indicating ventricular insufficiency or CHF
What is the S4 heart sound?
la-lub-dub: increased resistance to ventricular filling often found after MI or bypass
How do you assess for sternal stability?
Place hand over sternum and have patient raise their arms
What is the cutoff for capillary refill?
3-5 second
How do you asses for claudication time?
Walk until cramping and burning symptoms in the back of legs
