Lab 1 & 2 Flashcards
Two main hormones that the thyroid gland releases
Thyroxine (T4) - Largely inactive
Triiodothyronine (T3) - active
Is a part of your brain that controls function like blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature and digestion
hypothalamus
A small pea-sized gland located at the base of your brain, below the hypothalamus.
-How is it connected to the hypothalamus?
Pituitary gland
- pituitary stalk
What thyroid hormone is a better indicator of thyroid function when used alongside other thyroid hormone tests
Free T4 and T3
The thyroid gland makes and secretes very high levels of thyroid hormones
1. What animal is commonly affected?
Hyperthyroidism
1. Cat
Age range of cats affected by Hyperthyroidism
4-20+ years old
> 8 years old
Diagnosis of Hyperthyroidism
- Increased serum total thyroxine (T4)
Treatment options for Hyperthyroidism
- Mecarptoidmidazole

endocrine disease that occurs when the thyroid glands fail to produce adequate amounts of the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)
-Species that are more affected.
Hypothyroidism
-dogs
