L9: Application of Fragrance - Technical Aspects Flashcards
What are some types of perfumed cosmetic products?
- Fine fragrances
- Soaps
- Antiperspirants
- Shampoos
What are some technical aspects to consider for perfumed cosmetic products?
- Odour
- Solubility
- Stability
- Compatibility between fragrance and product ingredients
What are line-/extension products?
A cosmetic product that has a fragrance that pairs well with another cosmetic product (probably from the same company)
What is the purpose of a UV-absorber in fine fragrances?
To protect the product from degradation
What is the % fragrance concentrate in Parfum?
15 - 30%
What is the % fragrance concentrate in eau de parfum?
8 - 15%
What is the % fragrance concentrate in eau de toilette?
4 - 8%
What is the % fragrance concentrate in eau de cologne?
3 - 5%
What are some possible formulation concerns/issues for soaps?
- Colour of soap: match colour to fragrance type
- Discolouration in white soaps: may be associated with too much vanillin, chemical reaction due to high pH or reaction due to light exposure
What are some alternatives to using vanillin in soaps?
- Use only small amounts and formulate with strong colour
- Use non-discolouring synthetics with vanilla type odours
What are the 3 main types of ingredients in aerosol antiperspirants?
- Propellant gas
- Antiperspirant active
- Fragrance
What is a consideration for the antiperspirant active?
Suitable particle size distribution for effective dispensing (should be small enough to not clog the actuator system)
What is a consideration for the aerosol container?
Internally lacquered, so as to prevent ingredients from reacting with the metal container –> traces of metal ions can cause discolouration
What are the 4 main formulation considerations for aerosol antiperspirants?
- Acidic antiperspirant active can cause some fragrance ingredients to undergo chemical reactions
- Traces of metal ions in aerosol product can cause discolouration of active/perfume
- Odour balance of fragrance may be altered; increased surface area of droplets and volatile propellant are biased towards top notes
- Potential of corrosion
What are some possible formulation issues/concerns for shampoos?
- Fragrance ingredients may change shampoo viscosity
- Chemical reaction between fragrance ingredients and actives in shampoo; results in discolouration or off-odour
