L7 reproductive system Flashcards
what allow the testis to descend?
the gubernaculum. it is attaches to the testes and do not change size as the baby get bigger, so it drags the testes down over time
what is the name when the testes fail to descend
cryptorchidism
describe how the spermatic artery is arranged and why
the spermatic artery is coiled with the spermatic vein that are cooler so it keeps the temperature of the testes down (better for fertility)
what is the structure that is responsible the movement of the scrotum
the cremaster
what is the purpose of the epididymis
it is the site of sperm maturation (12 days)
how long does it take for the sperm to form from a germ cell and what is the process that unable a constant supply of sperm
64 days. the spermatogenic wave (each segment of the seminiferous tubule spematogenesis is ahead of the preceding one)
what is happening in the head of the epididymis
and what is the state of the sperm
it receive the sperm from testis, it contain stereocilia (for absorption of fluid). sperm cannot move
what happen in the body of the epididymis
convolution decrease and fluid content decrease.
what happen in the tail of the epididymis and sperm state
stereocilia decrease and muscularity increase. the sperm can swim but don’t need because of the muscular contraction. the concentration of sperm as increased by 100
what is the purpose of the vas deferens (45cm) and describe its structure.
sperm storage. it is constituted of three muscular layers, inner longitudinal, middle circular and outer longitudinal this allow peristalsis.
what is the purpose of the ovaries
produce oocytes an hormones
what is the purpose of the uterine tube
transport of oocyte to the uterus and site of fertilizations
what is the broad ligament
an extensive double layer of membrane that enclose ovaries, uterine tube, uterus.
what is the ovarian ligament
attach ovary to uterus
what is suspensory ligament
extends from ovary to pelvic wall (ovarian artery and vein travel along the suspensory ligament)
