L6- development and individual differences Flashcards
What is piagets cognitive disequilibrium?
New infomration does not match previous schema. Therefore the previous schema needs to be changed
What is the development and and chnage of schemas called?
Active construction
What are the two principles of piagets cognitive development?
Assimilaiton and accomodation
What is private/ inner speech?
Speech developed when others present and later used when alone
What is the definition of intelligence?
There are various definitions. It is the ability/ several abilities to complete underlying problem solving
Ability to cognitively solve problems
Explain the dimensions of intelligence
Different models for underlying dimensions.
Cognitive performance in different domains have a positive correlation . This suggests abilities have something in common but we have multiple types of abilities based on what the performance is for
What are the two groups of dimensional models of intelligence?
General factors of intelligence
- two factor model(spearman 1904) (performance on test is determined by general factor g and specific factor s
- fluid and crystallised intelligence (cettels 1963) (fluid = ability to perceive relations independent of previous practise and crystalized practise= ability to use learnt knowledge)
Specific factors
- seven primary mental abilities
- multiple intelligences
- emotional intelligence (cog ability to deal w emotion using three components)
Name intelligence tests and what the types are based off
- asses cog abilities
- different age groups
- individual vs group tests
- paper and pencil vs computer test
WISC
Distribution of intelligence
- 13%learning difficulties
0. 13% giftedness
Heritability equation
Heritability= variance of genotype divided by variance of phenotype
What is the flynn effect in iq?
7-8 iq points increase in the 20th century
Due to better nutrition and health and schooling
Is intelligence inheritable or due to environment
Mix of both
