What is a clinical psychologist?
Trained mental health professional which has a doctorate in clinical psychology.
They help clients recover from mental health difficulties.

- A psychiatrist. (More medical based approach)
- psychotherapist (specialise in psychotherapy)
- mental health nurse (specific undergraduate degree)

How what training is required to become a clinical psychologist?
BPS approved psychology course
2-4 years of clinical experience
Research experience (UG, RA, MSc projects)
Doctorate in clinical psychology (DClin)

What is a clinical doctorate ?
Another 3 year course, which is chartered by the BPS, where you are a practitioner psychologist with the health professions council
-paid by NHS
Has three parts:
- academic = learn psychological theory to support your clinical practise (cognitive- behavioural, psychodynamic, systematic)
- clinical= 6 month placements to learn how to apply the academic theory. Within different settings (GP clinic, NHS hospital, Community) and different client groups (children and families, working age adults, older adults, learning disabilities, physical illness)
- research = learn how to conduct, consume and evaluate research. (Small project, substantive project) science practitioner
Four key stages of a clinical job role:
Assessment -conduct clinical interviews/ psychological testing.
Formulation- conceptualise the client
Intervention- implement an evidence based strategy
Evaluation- determine the effectiveness of the strategy
