L4: Physiological and Psychological Benefits of Exercise Flashcards
What are 3 CV benefits of exercise?
- Lower blood pressure
- Reduced arterial stiffness
- Reduced blood vessel inflammation
What are 5 biomarkers of the CV system?
- BMI
- Blood pressure
- Blood glucose
- Triglycerides
- Cholestrol (HDL and LDL)
Does exercise benefit cholestrol levels?
No. The science is unclear. However, a good diet can help improve and maintain cholestrol levels
Why does the body need triglycerides?
The body can use triglycerides as a form of energy
Why does the body need cholestrol?
The body uses choelstrol for hormones and supporting cell membranes
What organ produces LDL, and what is LDL’s purpose in the body?
The liver produces LDL from food/nutrience for energy and hormone production
Why is excess LDL bad for the body?
Lipoprotiens deposit excess LDL which can result in plaque formation in arteries, increasing the risk of CVD
Why does the body need HDL?
The body uses HDL to remove LDL in the arteries, returning them to the liver for removal
Atherosclerosis
The formation of plaque (fat, cholestrol, etc) in arteries
What are 4 benefits of exercise to CV health?
- Increased vascular density in muscles
- Lower blood pressure at rest
- Left Ventricular hypertrophy
- Higher VO₂ max
Type 1 diabetes
An autoimmune disease which attacks the pancreas, reducing insulin production
Type 2 diabetes
A more preventable and modifiable form of diabetes where cells build a stronger resistance to insulin
Why does the body need insulin?
The body needs insulin so cells can use glucose
What happens to bone density, tendons, and ligaments with exercise?
Larger and stronger
What are 3 psychological benefits of exercise
- Improved sleep
- Improved neuroplasticity
- Reduced stress/anxiety
