L3: Assessing Fitness Flashcards
Cardiorespiratory fitness
Aerobic fitness that improves the heart and lung’s ability to deliver oxygenated blood to working muscles
VO₂ max
The maximal rate of oxygen that the body can use during exercise. It is the gold standard of cardiorespiratory fitness
What are the two parts needed for calculating VO₂ max?
Central cardiac output and peripheral aterial-venous oxygen difference
How is VO₂ max usually tested?
By having people perform intense aerobic exercise for prolonged periods of time using a breathing mask and heart rate monitor
What are 4 sub-maximal tests for estiamting VO₂ max?
- Shuttle/beep test
- 1.5 mile run test
- Cycle ergometer test
- Step test
What is PAR-Q and why is it important?
Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire. It determines whether study participants are ready/approriate for excercise
What are the 3 benefits and 1 flaw of physical activity questionnaries?
Benefits:
1. Cheap
2. Quick
3. Can cover whole populations
Flaw:
1. Recall bias
What is an accelerometer?
A device which measures physical activity through prolonged periods of time (days, weeks, or longer)
Flexibility
The range of motion of a joint or group of joints. All flexibility is joint specific
What are 2 tests for flexibility?
- Groin flexibility test
- Sit-and-reach test
Muscular strength
The maximum amount of force a muscle or group of muscles can generate in a single maximal effort
What are two tests for muscular strength?
- Handgrip
- Biodex isokinetic testing
Muscular endurance
The ability of a muscle or group of muscles to perform repeated contractions over time
What are 2 common tests for muscle endurance?
- Consecutive pushups
- Consecutive sit-ups
Body composition
The relative amounts of fat and lean body tissue found in the body
