L3.3 - Gender Bias Flashcards
How does gender bias affect diagnosis?
Accuracy of diagnosis can be dependent on patient’s gender, leading to gender bias
What are some things men experience more?
Negative symptoms
Substance abuse
Men and women have what differences
Men have earlier age of onset and both genders have different peak ages of when SZ is likely to begin
How can psychologists show gender bias?
Stereotypical beliefs about gender, e.g. healthy adult behaviour more linked to healthy men
Invalid diagnosis
Limitation of gender bias related to healthy adult behaviour linked to healthy men?
Shows androcentrism
Females’ healthy behaviour may be different but not taken into account so could mean more likely to be diagnosed
Reduced validity
Limitation related to validity
Different onset ages and types of SZ m/f vulnerable to
Can increase likelihood of invalid diagnosis if gender differences are underestimated (beta bias) and this isn’t taken into account
Advantage of gender bias?
Research found females have sex hormone estradiol which is protective and lowers chances of SZ
