Define positive symptoms
Refers to when symptoms weren’t present when the person was healthy but now soonest once they’ve developed schizophrenia
Define negative symptoms
Reduction or loss of functioning which causes a weakened ability to cope and manage with everyday life
E.g. avolition and speech poverty
Define auditory hallucinations
Hearing voices that don’t exist which can be heard in one or a mixture of voices, often giving a running (negative) commentary of the person’s behaviour that the person may respond to
Define visual hallucinations
Seeing things like images and objects which don’t exist, which may or may not be disturbing
Define olfactory hallucinations
Smelling odours which don’t exist, e.g. perfume
Define tactile hallucinations
Believing that one can feel things which aren’t actually present, e.g. someone touching them
Define delusions of grandeur
One believing that they’re someone important or powerful like God, sometimes meaning they think they have special powers which can lead them to hurt themselves
Define delusions of persecution
Believing that everyone is conspiring against them and that everyone dislikes them
Leads to having a negative attitude towards most people
Define delusions of reference
Believing that objects, events, and sings have s personal significance which refers directly to them
May become emotionally attached to objects
Define avolition
Having a reduced interest/desire or inability to initiate/persist in goal directed behaviour available to them
May result in poor hygiene, lack of persistence in work, and a lack of energy
Define speech poverty/alogia
Less fluent and productive speech as a result of slowed thinking and blocked thoughts
