How does token economy work?
Giving patients rewards for not displaying unusual behaviour or showing desirable ones immediately after they do it
What is token economy?
Reducing maladaptive learning through reconditioning and operant conditioning

Manages behavioural not cognitive

Disadvantage related to ethics?
Rewards are basic things like food and outings
Manipulation of patients to manage behaviour
May be disturbed so can’t give informed consent

45 female patients
Rewarded with plastic tokens when showing desirable behavioural

Results from research
Daily chores increased from 5-40
Desirable behaviours increased; undesirable decreased
Evaluation for the study?
+ Didn’t use drug therapy, so is effective, no side effects so doesn’t have to stop unlike APs
+ 11/13 studies found beneficial, effective outcomes of TE increasing adaptive behaviour esp w/ psychological therapy
