How does the ICD-10 classify schizophrenia?
Focuses on clusters of symptoms needed to classify a psychiatric illness
Focuses on subtypes
How does the DSM-V classify it?
Disorders classified by features
Doesn’t classify it by subtypes anymore
What is criterion A of the DSM-V?
2 or more needed of:
Delusions
Hallucinations
Negative symptoms
When does only one of criterion A need to be met of the DSM-V?
If hallucinations or delusions consist of running commentary of the person’s thoughts and behaviours
What is criterion B?
Work/interpersonal/self-care is affected
Called social/occupational dysfunction
What is criterion C?
Signs of disturbance need to be continuous for 6 months
Criterion A symptoms must be present for at least a month
During non-active periods, disturbance may limit to negative symptoms, or 2 or more from criterion A
