L23 Flashcards
2 physiological concepts of adaptation
proteins continually turned over/recycled.
number and type of proteins driven by strain from stress
how do we get more protein?
stress signals activate specific pathways which activate transcription factors that switch on/off genes to produce code for new proteins (mRNA). proteins made by ribosomes using this code.
is signalling a prerequisute for proetin synthesis?
yes
is protein synthesis ganrunteed?
no, also need amino acids to make protein. also the michinery (usable DNA, nuclei and ribosomes)
What is the typical timeframe for mRNA response following an initial stress or stimulus
mRNA response peaks within hours after the stimulus, returning to baseline levels by approximately 24 hours. so we need to repeat an appropriate stress.
how long does it take to see measurebale/functional protein synthesis
weeeks
is there individual differences in protein synthesis ?
yes, huge
when are proteins lost
over days to months.
what four things does nature and extent of adaptation depend on
exercise parameters
personal (genes, age, clinical status)
diet - available of substare available
environment
how does genes age and clinical status effect nature and extent of adaptation
genes - diff in 1000s genes (protein codes) and sex effect
ages - children less anabolic sex steriod hormone. old age blunted cell signalling
clinical - some diseases increase or decrease protein production.
