L2 Clinical Notes Flashcards
What causes paralysis of the serratus anterior muscle?
Injury to the long thoracic N
What does injury to the long thoracic N result in?
Paralysis of serratus anterior muscle
Winging of the scapula away from the thoracic wall which makes abducting the upper limb beyond the horizontal positional difficult
Which muscles form the rotator cuff?
Subscapularis, supraspinatus, infraspinatus and teres minor
SITS
What do the rotator cuff muscles offer?
Stability to the glenohumeral joint
Trauma can injure or tear any of the rotator cuff muscles resulting in what?
Instability of the glenohumeral joint
What is the most commonly injured rotator cuff muscle?
Supraspinatus
What is the bicipital myotactic reflex?
Should be produced upon striking the thumb as it as placed over the bicipital tendon with a reflex hammer
Failure of the tendon to tighten up and the forearm to flex slightly when testing for the bicipital myotactic reflex could suggest what?
injury to the musculocutaneous nerve or C5 and C6 anterior rami
What is biceps tendinitis?
Repetitive movement of the long head of the biceps T through the intertubercular groove makes that tendon susceptible to inflammation and even crepitus (crackling sound)
What is a Popeye deformity?
The biceps tendon is capable of dislocating out of the intertubercular groove or even separating entirely from the supraglenoid tubercle which results in the muscles balling up in the mid arm
What is elbow tendinitis or tennis elbow?
Caused by repetitive use of the superficial extensor muscles of the forearm and involves pain over the lateral epicondyle and down the posterior forearm
What is lateral epicondylitis?
Repeated flexion and extension of the wrist strains the periosteum of the lateral humeral epicondyle
What can be lost with injury to the median N?
The complicated action of opposition of the thumb
Even a very superficial injury of the palm can damage the recurrent branch of the median nerve which Innervates the muscles involved in opposition
