It is a simple visual guide to the proportion and types of foods that we
should eat every day for good health.
Food Pyramid
Rich source of Proteins, minerals and Vitamins:
(Include milk, yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products , etc.)
Rich source of certain vitamins and minerals:
(Green leafy vegetable and fruits (papaya, mango, guava, berry, orange, etc.)
Rich sources of carbohydrate and fair to good sources of protein & vitamin B:
(Rice, wheat, maize, millet, potato, sweet potato, pulses etc.)
Protein, Fats, and some minerals:
Include meat, fish, eggs.
(Vegetable oils, animal fats and sweets)
Rich source of energy, fair to good source of essential fatty acids and vitamin E
Food Pyramid
It is a simple visual guide to proportion and types of foods that we should eat every day for good health. It contains the core food groups according to how much they contribute to a balanced diet.
It is based on the recommended food intake for 19–50 years old.
However proportions of each food group are generally applicable to all age groups from 2–70 years.
Food Pyramid
is available for older people > 70 years to be consistent with their nutrient needs.
A modified food pyramid
(largest portion)
include the 3 plant-based groups; grains, fruits & vegetables.
contain nutrients as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
the main source of carbohydrates and fiber in our diet.
choices better be among enriched or fortified whole-grain.
The basal layers
It includes milk, yoghurt, cheese & alternatives → provide calcium, protein, plus other vitamins and minerals.
Try to choose low fat dairy products to limit excess calories.
Try to include meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, dry beans, seeds, legumes → provide proteins and nutrients including iodine, iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and healthy fats.
The middle layer
Refers to healthy fats, needed in small amounts every day to support heart health and brain function.
Avoid foods that contain saturated fats and trans fats.
Choose unrefined fats from plant sources as olive oil, nut and seed oils.
