What is nephrotic syndrome?
Conditions where tiny filtering units in the kidneys do not work properly and leak the protein therefore is not enough protein in the blood to soak up water. Which water then moves from the blood into body tissue causing swelling.
Symptoms of nephrotic syndrome
-swelling of the body. Low levels of protein reduced flow of water
-high level of urine passed
-greater chance of catching infections due to loss of proteins
Cause of nephrotic syndrome?
-It sometimes occurs as a result of kidney damage caused by another condition
-inherited faulty gene
Treatment of nephrotic syndrome
-Steroids to reduce inflammation and immune response
-ACE inhibitors reduce high blood pressure caused by fluid imbalance.
-kidney transplant.
What is stroke?
Clot blocks blood vessel in brain. Brain tissue hey deprived of oxygen and nutrients and die.
What are symptoms of stroke?
-Face may drop to one side
- may not be able to lift both arms and keep them there
-speech may be slurred
-severe headache resulting in blinding pain.
Causes of stroke
-diet, smoking, alcohol and being over aged 65 increases the chance.
-high blood pressure can weaken the brain risk factors include coronary heart disease, high blood pressure.
Treatment for strokes
-Physiotherapy
- surgery to remove clot
-beta blockers to lower blood pressure.
-statins if cholesterol is too high
Lifestyle impacts of nephrotic syndrome?
Emotional- long hospital visits
-daily urine tests and medication. -Regular blood tests damage to vessels which can cause fear.
-poor growth and weight gain- long term effects on organ functions
Stroke impact on lifestyle?
-Speech, hearing and sight problems/ restrictions
-mobility restrictions
-effects relationships, social life
-can feel isolated.
-depression and lack of empowerment.
Multiple sclerosis what is it?
Disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system.
Symptoms and effects of multiple sclerosis?
-fatigue
-vision problems
-mobility problems
-depression and anxiety.
-numbness
Causes of multiple sclerosis?
Autoimmune can be triggered by viral, genetic and environmental factors
Treatment of multiple sclerosis?
-Disease modifying therapies
-medication
-physiotherapy to help with mobility
Lifestyle impacts for multiple sclerosis?
-Fatigue/ affects ability to do daily tasks
-memory: thinking problems can affect education/ work/ relationships
-frequent chest infections
