L03: Body Fluids Flashcards
Which compartments is extracellular fluid (fluid outside cells) found
intravascular (inside blood vessels but not blood cells)
Interstitial (between cells)
Transcellular (chambers/spaces lined by epithelial)
Where is transcellular fluid found
In cells only
Where is most of out water content found ? Intracellular or extracellular
Intracellular
What is the blood made of
Plasma
Haematocrit
What is the haematocrit
Platelets
Leukocytes
Erythrocytes
What does the plasma involve
Sodium Potassium Calcium Chloride Bicarbonate Glucose
What is an osmole
The measure of NUMBER of molecules that a compound dissociates into when dissolved in solution
What happens to the osmole of 100mmol NaCl when it dissolves in a solution
Becomes 200m osm due to na+ and Cl- ions dissociated from the compound
What is osmolality
The number of osmoles per unit mass of solvent (osm.kg-1)
What is osmolarity
Number of osmoles per unit volume of solution (osm.L-1)
Is osmosis driven by osmalality or osmolarity
Osmolality
What is an osmotic pressure
The force that occurs between 2 solution with a semipermeable membrane and difference in conc of the 2 solutions. Ions cannot pass through the membrane so water moves to equal out the concentrations.
What is an isotonic solution
When there is no net movement of fluid from the cells and fluid.
What is an isosmotic solution
Solutions that share the same osmolality
What pressure is generated by proteins when it cannot pass the capillaries
Oncotic pressure
