L-37 Flashcards
What is severe combined immunodeficiency?
X chromosome linked disease that causes patients to lack functional T and B cells
What group is SCID most common in?
XY males
What cells are targeted and killed by HIV?
CD4-T cells
What does HIV infection impact on in the immune system? And therefor what is the effect?
CD4 T helper cells, lack of Immunity to microbes and to cancer ( can also effect macrophages, monocytes, and dendritic cells)
What normally prevents autoimmune disease?
Host mechanisms of immune tolerance
What developes immune tolerance?
Thymus acts to delete auto reactive T cells
What is rheumatoid arthritis?
An autoimmune disorder that primarily affects joints
Around what percent of the population is affected by rheumatoid arthritis?
1%
What autoimmune response cause type 1 diabetes?
Attack of insulin producing beta cells
What is the name for antigens that trigger allergic reactions?
Allergens
What are normal allergens?
Non toxic plant, animal, and food materials
What is the effector response to allergens? ( peanut)
- DC present peptides from peanut proteins to helper T cells
- Primed helper T cells activate B cells to secrete IgE
- Secreted IgE binds to mast cell receptor (FcR)
- binding of peanut proteins to FcR on mast cells triggers mast cell degranulation and release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators
What is the most common cause of food allergies in children?
Peanuts
What percent of the people in the US have a peanut allergy?
2%
For what percent of people are peanut allergies lifelong?
80%
