Two uses of the interrogative τίς, τί
1) Pronoun (most often); used as a substantive
τίς διδάσκει τὰ τέκνα; Who is teaching the children?
2) Adjective (less often); modify a noun
τίνα καρπὸν ἔχετε; What (sort of) fruit do you have?
For interrogative pronoun which case, number, and gender typically means why?
the accusative singular neuter (τί)
τί λέγεις τοῦτο; “Why do you say this?”
Two uses of the indefinite pronoun τις, τι
1) Pronoun; used as a substantive
ἐάν τις εἴπῃ, ὑμεῖς ἀκούσετε. If someone speaks, you will listen.
2) Adjective; modify a noun
ἀνήρ τις ἦλθε πρὸς τὸ ἱερόν. A certain man went to the temple.
The relative pronoun will typically take the gender and number of the word it is modifying, and use the case that is using in the sentence. What is one exception that frequently occurs?
1) when antecedent is genitive or dative case
2) and the relative itself would normally be in the accusative case as the object of a verb
3) takes on case of antecedent
The antecedent of a relative pronoun may be omitted which means what?
1) translation may need to supply a word to complete the sense.
2) Thus, ὅς may be translated not simply “who” but “he who” or “the one who.”
In some cases, ὅστις may be equivalent to what?
the simple relative ὅς
