Knee Examination - Look
Inspect from all sides including stance.
Position patient supine for deformity
Knee Examination - Feel
- Temperature
- Borders of Patella
- Popliteal
- Patella Tap
Knee Examination - Move
Active and Passive Flexion and Extension
Knee Special Tests
Posterior Sag Test - Knee Flexed to 90 degrees. Observe for a posterior sag of the tibia. (PCL)
Lachmans - Knee Flexed to 20 degrees, pull tibia forwards and hold thigh feeling for a solid end point (ACL)
Lateral + Medial Collateral - Knee at 20 degrees hold heel, and apply valgus and varus stress.
Knee Examination - Conclusion
Examine ankle and hip.
Offer neurovascular.
Thank the patient and ask them to redress and wash your hands.
What is McMurray’s Test?
Tests for a torn meniscus.
Flex the hip to 90 degrees, maximally flex the knee, externally rotate the knee and extend the knee.
