Look, Feel, Move
Hip Examination - Look
- Inspect from all sides.
- Assess Gait.
- Trendelenburg’s Test
- Thomas’s Test
What is Trendelenburg’s Test?
Ask the patient to stand on one leg.
A positive test leads to the pelvis dipping on the contralateral side.
What is Thomas’s Test?
Assessing for a fixed flexion deformity of a hip. Flex the contralateral hip. A positive test leads to the deformed hip rising off the bed.
Hip Examination - Feel
- Do they have any pain?
- Palpate the greater trochanter.
Hip Examination - Move
Active - Flexion, Abduction and Adduction.
Passive - Flexion, Abduction and Adduction
Passive Internal and External Rotation with hip extended and flexed.
Measure Leg Length - From Asis to Medial Malleolus.
Hip Examination - Completion
Examine the Lumbar Spine and Knee
Offer Neurovascular Examination
Thank the Patient and ask them to redress and wash their hands.
