Elbow Examination - Inspection
Look at the patient when they are standing with their hands by their sides. Inspect the position of the elbows at rest. Inspect the skin on the arms and the elbows.
Elbow Examination - Feel
- Assess the Temperature of the Skin.
- Palpate the radial head and medial and lateral epicondyles.
Elbow Examination - Move
Assess active and passive range of movement: Flexion, Extension, Pronation, Supination.
How to assess Elbow function?
Can they move their hand to their mouth?
Elbow Special Tests
Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer’s Elbow)- Resisted Wrist Flexion.
Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)- Resisted Wrist Extension.
Elbow Examination - Conclusion
Examine the ipsilateral shoulder and wrist.
Offer Neurovascular examination.
Thank the patient and let them redress.
Wash your hands.
