Goal setting theory definition
In order to provide motivation for the employees, goals should be based around 5 key principles:
Clarity
Challenge
Commitment
Feedback
Task-complexity
Disadvantages
When two separate goals are set at the same time, exerting too much focus on one may make it difficult to achieve the other
goals have risks.
focuses on how goals are related to job performance but does not take into
account the “why” i.e. Why setting goals is linked to performance
Clarity
Clear goals help give employee a specific direction to work toward. They know exactly what needs to be achieved and how it will be measured.
Challenge
The more challenging a goal, the more motivation it can provide. This means that goals need to extend employees, so that they can work hard to achieve them, but without being too ambitious so the employees feel the goals are beyond their reach.
Commitment
Commitment towards the achievement of the goal. If the manager sets the challenging goal themselves, they need to find a way to get the employee on board and committed to the cause. This can be achieved by expressing the importance of the goal and its relevance to the employee.
Task-complexity
Manager must be careful that the complexity of the goal is not completly beyond the ability of the employees and tailored to their abilities. This ensures that goals can be achieved, providing employees with a sense of achievement and enabling the business to achieve its wider objectives.
Feedback
The manager should provide constructive feedback to the employee during the process of working towards a goal. Without this feedback, the employee will find it difficult to alter the level or direction of their effort.
Goal setting +.
Goals are usually aligned with the objectives of the business -> motivation towards the goal helps the business achieve their own objectives
Due to challenging nature of the goals, the employees are likely to continue to develop their skills and knowledge
Employees know exactly what they need to achieve because there is clarity with each goal that is set
-
Time consuming to set goals for employees + Challenging for the manager to set goals that are not too challenging or overwhelming
Once a goal has been achieved, a new goal needs to be set
Failure to meet a goal can harm an employee’s self-esteem -> negatively impacting their performance
