kk2a Flashcards
Define Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
The five set of needs that re responsible of motivating individuals: Physiological, safety, social, esteem and self-actualisation. These need to be satisfied in sequential order and once satisfied, it is no longer a motivation.
Physiological
refers to the needs that
must be met in order for people to survive e.g. basic pay and working conditions.
Safety
Being safe and having a sense of job security e.g. meeting O H & S standards and longer term contracts.
Social
Wanting a sense of connection + build strong relationships e.g. social events and working in teams
Esteem
A sense of respect and self-esteem as well as possible status e.g. recognition and rewards programs + promotions
Self- actualisation
wanting fulfilment and to achieve one’s potential e.g. challenging work, ongoing career development
Maslow +
- Provides a scaffold for managers to use when motivating employees
- Recognises that motivation is dynamic and changes over time as needs are satisfied -> helping improve motivation across the entire work life of individuals
Highlights the importance of non-financial motivators (self- actualisation and social) which may not cost business to much money (financial)
Maslow -
It is not easy to identify where an employee is on the hierarchy -> difficult to implement strategies
Difficult to monitor the progression of an individual up the hierarchy as a strategy will satisfy the need for some employees but not others
assumes all employees are motivated by the same need
