Kidney Anatomy And Histology 1 Flashcards
Function of the renal capsule?
Made of connective tissue, As a physical barrier; protection against trauma and maintains the shape of the kidney
Function of adipose capsule?
Made of connective tissue; acts as padding, physical protection and maintains the position of the kidneys
What is the function of renal fascia?
A connective tissue that anchors the kidneys to surrounding structures
What is the glomerulus?
An endothelium that’s a specialised network/knot of capillaries, with an input from afferent arterioles and an output of efferent arterioles
What is the glomerular (bowman’s) capsule?
An epithelium (not cardiovascular) that performs the first step in blood filtration, with podocytes (modified epithelium) on the visceral side, and simple squamous epithelium forming the outer wall of the capsule on the parietal side
What does the fenestrated endothelium block?
Cells
What does the basal lamina block?
Cells and large proteins
What does the slit membrane block?
Cells, large proteins and medium proteins
How does oxygenated blood circulate the medulla?
Descending vasa recta (from efferent arterioles)
How does deoxygenated blood leave the medulla (from peritubular capillaries of the medulla)?
Ascending vasa recta
What delivers blood to the glomerulus capillaries/cortex?
Afferent arterioles (from interlobular arteries)
