Methenamine mandelate
UTIs, pyelonephritis, cystitis. Effective when urine pH less than 5.5. Avoid milk (alkaline). Don’t take with formaldehyde and sulfamethizole.
Mucomyst (acetylcysteine)
Given pre-procedure for cardiac catheterization to protect kidneys so they can excrete the iodine dye. Antidote for acetaminophen OD.
Nephrotic syndrome
Diuretics, ACEI (block aldosterone secretion), prednisone to dec inflammation and shrink holes so protein can’t get out. Lipid lowering agents. Protein Inc. Na dec. anticoagulation therapy. Dialysis
Kidney stones (urolithiasis)
Ketorolac (toradol) for short term pain relief up to 5 days, ondansetron for n/v, hydromorphone for pain
Phenazopyridine
Urinary analgesic and spasmolytic. Will not get rid of bacteria. SE- headache and vertigo, yellowing of skin or sclera indicates medication accumulation due to kidney injury
