Key Organic Terms Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound containing hydrogen and carbon ONLY
What is a saturated compoung?
Compounds with single carbon-carbon bonds
What is an unsaturated compunt?
Compounds with multiple Carbon carbon bonds (C–C, C—C) and benzene rings
What is a functional group?
A group of atoms responsible for the characteristic of reactions.
What is an aldehyde?
C double bond O at the end of the chain.
What is a keytone?
C double bond surrounded by 2 carbons. In middle of the chain
What is a homolohous series?
A series of organic compounds having the same functional group but each successive member differing by CH2
What is the carboxylic acid functional group?
COOH (C–O, O-H)
What is a staight chain?
A continuous chain of carbon atoms joined together with no branches (shorter C chains)
What is a branched chain?
The longest continuous chain of carbon atoms has at least one shorter carbon chain branching off from a carbon atom within the main chain.
What is an alkyl group?
A group with the formula CnH2n+1.
They are formed when you remove one hydrogen atom from the alkane chain.
eg, Methane (CH4) to Methyl (CH3)
What is an aromatic compound?
A compound with at least one benzene?
What s an aliphatic compound?
A compound containing carbon and hydrogen joined together in straight or branched chains (no aromatic rings)
What are alicyclic compunds?
An aliphatic compound arranged in non-aromatic (benzene) rings, with or without side chains.
What are cyclic compunds?
A compound with any kind of ring as part of the structure.
