Alkylation & Acylation of benzene Flashcards
What is alkylation of benzene?
When H atom in benzene ring is substituted with an alkyl group
Requires electrophilic substitution and use of halogen carrier, AlCl3
What is acylation of benzene?
The susbstitution of H atom in benzene ring with an acyl group
eg. ethanoyl (Ch3CO), propanoyl (CH3CH2CO)
Requires electrophilic substitution and use of halogen-carrier AlCl3
Why are acylation and alkylation important in organic synthesis?
They increase the number of carbon atoms in the structure
How does alkylation of benzene work?
React benzene with a haloalkane in presence of AlCl3 catalyst. Also produces HCl.
How does acylation of benzene work?
React benzene with an acyl chloride in presence of AlCl3 catalyst. Also produces HCl.
What is the suffix of an acyl?
-oyl
What is the suffix of an alkyl?
-yl
