Alkenes (bonding and structure) Flashcards
1
Q
What does a CāC double bond consist of?
A
A Ļ (sigma) bond and a š (pi) bond
- Ļ bond formed by direct overlap of orbitals between bonding atoms
- š bond = sideways overlap of adjacet p orbitals above and below the C atoms. The e- of this is concentrated above and below the carbon atoms.

Q
Do CāC double bonds count as one or two electron reigions?
A
One. This is important when working out the shape of alkenes. They have equal repulsion to sigma bonds
