Alkenes (bonding and structure) Flashcards

Q

What does a Cā€“C double bond consist of?

A

A Ļƒ (sigma) bond and a š›‘ (pi) bond
- Ļƒ bond formed by direct overlap of orbitals between bonding atoms
- š›‘ bond = sideways overlap of adjacet p orbitals above and below the C atoms. The e- of this is concentrated above and below the carbon atoms.

Q

Do Cā€“C double bonds count as one or two electron reigions?

A

One. This is important when working out the shape of alkenes. They have equal repulsion to sigma bonds
