Group 2 Flashcards
What is the outer shell electron confugration of group 2 metals?
s2
Why do group 2 metals become more reactive down the group?
The first and second ionisation energies decrease. Because there is more shielding and greater atomic radius.
What is the oxidation number of group two atoms?
+2, they are oxidised to form 2+ ions.
What is the product of a group 2 metal oxide reacting with water?
Metal hydroxide
Eg: Mg0 + H20 = Mg(OH)2
How does solubility of group 2 metal hydroxides change down the group and how does this affect ph?
It increases down the group, making them more alkaline (OH dissociates more easily) so pH increases.
What is the use of calcium hydroxide in agriculture?
Neutralising acidic soil
What is the use of magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate in medicine?
as an antacid to neutralise excess stomach acid for those with indigestion.
