E/Z Isomerism Flashcards
1
Q
What is E/Z Isomerism?
A
A form of stereoisomerism.
2
Q
What is steroisomerism?
A
Same structural formula but different spatial arrangement of atoms
3
Q
When do alkenes show E/Z isomerism?
A
When there are different atoms/groups bonded to EACH carbon of the double bond. They are fixed in spatial arrangement due to lack of rotation of C–C
4
Q
How do you determine priority when naming isomers?
A
Look at 2 atoms bonded directly to each C of C–C. Highest atomic number = highest priority.
Highest priority on same side of C–C = Z (zusammen)
Highest priority on opposite side of C—C = E
