Covalent bonds absorb IR radiation, they vibrate.
Different bonds absorb different frequencies of IR

Transmission % of IR wavelengths

Why are there so many peaks on an infared spectra?
A
There are different ways the bonds absorb the radiation. Eg asymmetrical stretching which all require a different amount of infrared.
