What is birth asphyxia?

A

Deprivation of oxygen to a new-born infant that lasts long enough during the process to cause physical harm (brain)

Diagnostic criteria birth asphyxia

A
  • Metabolic acidosis
  • Early onset moder/severe encephalopathy
  • Abnormal CTG - sustained foetal bradycardia/abscence of FHR variability
  • Multisystem dysfnction within 72 hours of birth
  • Apgar score <5 at 5 mins

  • Hyperactive, high pitched cry, hypertonia
  • Diarrhoea, disorganised suck
  • Respiratory
  • Apnoea
  • Weight loss
  • Alkalosis
  • Lacrimation
