What is birth asphyxia?
A
Deprivation of oxygen to a new-born infant that lasts long enough during the process to cause physical harm (brain)

Diagnostic criteria birth asphyxia
A
- Metabolic acidosis
- Early onset moder/severe encephalopathy
- Abnormal CTG - sustained foetal bradycardia/abscence of FHR variability
- Multisystem dysfnction within 72 hours of birth
- Apgar score <5 at 5 mins

What is meconium aspiration?
A
Meconium aspiration leading to resp distress.
Widespread inspiratory crackles

What is neonatal abstinence?
A
Drug withdrawal sundrome caused by cessatio of maternal medication

Symptoms of neonatal abstience
A
WITHDRAWAL
- Withdrawal
- Irritability
- Tremors
- Hyperactive, high pitched cry, hypertonia
- Diarrhoea, disorganised suck
- Respiratory
- Apnoea
- Weight loss
- Alkalosis
- Lacrimation
