The Sinking Fund
- Introduced as a measure to restore national debt. Pitt would put £1 million a year into the Sinking Fund from taxes. It cut the debt by £10 mil.
The Anglo-French Trade Treaty

Both countries agreed to reduce duties on imports from the other country.
Consolidation Act
1787.
Pitt lowered, simplified or removed the outdated and complex customs duties on both imports and exports. Taxes on tea, wine, tobacco reduced which decreased smuggling. Book of Rates published rate of duty.
Cartwright invented the power loom
1789.
Industrialisation was impacting the cotton industry. Handloom weavers suffered as a result of this.
Start of the French Revolution

Caused unrest and fear, Corresponding Societies sprung up in London, and many people started wanting reform. However it scared the government and it took a step back from reform.
Publication of ‘Reflections of the Revolution in France’ by Edmund Burke.

Condemned the revolutionists.
Publication of ‘The Rights of Man’ by Tom Paine.
1791.
In support of the revolution.
Formation of the Society of United Irishmen
1791.
Aimed to establish a democracy in Ireland with equal rights for all men, no matter their religion.
Order against Seditious Writings
1792.
Issued to carb radical influence. Pitt was made nervous by the spread of Corresponding Societies and various anti-government publications.
September Massacres.
1792.
Revolutionary Leaders in France allowed the deaths of thousands of French prisoners who were counter-revolutionists. Met by revulsion in Britain and quietened some reformers.
London Corresponding Society formed
1792.
Most influential Corresponding Society. Members wanted political reform and lower taxes. They exchanged ideas through meetings and pamphlet distribution- Propaganda.
