A

The French Revolution encouraged the Catholics in Ireland to demand reforms. Their Parliament was made up of Protestant English people and most of Ireland’s land was owned by English Protestant Settlers.

When was the Society of United Irishmen formed?

A

October 1791. They aimed for a democracy in Ireland and for equal rights for all men no matter the religion. The founder was Wolfe Tone and he beieved that the ascendancy would have to be ousted so they could have freedom.

A

Wolfe Tone was involved in plotting French landings in Ireland for a rebellion and was sent to prison. This made it clear to Pitt that the mostly Protestant Parliament could not maintain stability and gave him motivation to unite with Ireland.
