Five. Political Pressures. Flashcards
Why did the Political Activity after the French Revolution in 1789 amongst Middle Class radicals fail to make any headway?
The feelings of the majority outweighed their influence, ‘supporters of the established order’ were well organised, and the ugly events in France upset people and made them fear reform.
Give an example of a radical response to the French Revolution.
The London Corresponding Society was set up in 1792 by Thomas Hardy. Members wanted political reforms and lower taxes.
Why did Pitt pass an order against ‘Seditious Writings’ in 1792?
To curb radical inflence, the rapid spread of the Corresponding Societies and other anti-government publications made Pitt feel nervous.
What happened in 1794?
Habeas Corpus was suspended which enabled authorities to arrest and detain people without a trial.
What happened in 1795?
The Treasonabe Practices Act made it an offence to speak about the King.
What was the basic view of Pitt’s reaction to radicalism after the French Revolution?
Historians think that Pitt over-reacted. The measures were ineffective in curtailing activities of reform movement and they restricted political reform. However, Pitt was well supported at the time.
What effect did Pitt’s measures have on the government?
Set the tone for a repressive government for many years. It wasn’t until Lord Liverpool’s government that things started to change.
What effect did the French Revolution have on Ireland?
The French Revolution encouraged the Catholics in Ireland to demand reforms. Their Parliament was made up of Protestant English people and most of Ireland’s land was owned by English Protestant Settlers.
When was the Society of United Irishmen formed?
October 1791. They aimed for a democracy in Ireland and for equal rights for all men no matter the religion. The founder was Wolfe Tone and he beieved that the ascendancy would have to be ousted so they could have freedom.
What was the Catholic Relief Act, 1793?
Allowed Catholics the right to vote but not to become mps.
What happened in 1795?
Pitt tried to introduce Catholic Emancipation but King George fiercely opposed this which increased tensions between Catholics and Protestants and the Society of United Irishmen became more determined.
What happened in 1797-1798?
Wolfe Tone was involved in plotting French landings in Ireland for a rebellion and was sent to prison. This made it clear to Pitt that the mostly Protestant Parliament could not maintain stability and gave him motivation to unite with Ireland.
What was the Act of Union 1800?
Pitt brought Ireland into the British political system. He resigned in 1801 after George 111 prevented his promised relief to the Catholics.
What effect did the French Revolution have on the Whigs?
Caused the party to disintegrate because many could not agree on the danger of the French Revolution. E.g Fox supported it and Burke did not and sided with Pitt.
What effect did the French Revolution have on the supporters of Parliamentary Reform?
Stopped it. Pitt had passed acts and many people became frightened.
