Why was there uncertainty surrounding the monarchy?
King George suffered intermittent periods of mental illness and his instability had its affect on the government. His behaviour was unpredictable, leading to a degree of political uncertainty. After 1811, he was permanently incapacitated, at which point his son (later George IV) became Prince Regent.
What did the Government do in 1798?
Extend it’s control over newspapers.
What Humanitarian Social Policies were there?
Evangelical movement within the Church of England, support of influential dissenting sects (such as Quakers and Methodists- emerging political opinions about freedom and an inalienable human right) and the Abolition of Slavery (1787, 1807, 1833).
What were the Luddites?
They broke machinery and started in 1811, they felt that machines were taking over their jobs. The government reacted by imposing severe penalties on convicted rioters and machine breakers.
What was the Peterloo Massacre?
In 1819, a peaceful crowd gathered in St.Peter’s field in Manchester to listen to Henry Hunt speak of political reform. 11 people were killed and 400 injured.
What happened in 1800 and 1801?
There were food riots and other protests at the economic hardships caused by the French Wars.
How did the government respond to Popular unrest?
The response was generally one of fear and repression, partly because of War with France. Industrialisation and Urbanisation of England was leading to the emergency of new political allegiances.
What was Enclosure?
Enclosure entailed moving to a system of farming smaller, enclosed fields lying next to each other, which were worked by one person as a farm or small-holding.
What happened regarding Textile manufacture?
Development of steam power enabled the use of power looms and spinning frames in cotton mills.
