Ketamine Flashcards
What type is Ketamine?
Dissociative anaesthetic with analgesic effects. an NMDA receptor agonist
What is the action of Ketamine?
Dissociates the central nervous system from painful stimuli. At low doses it causes a trance like state with analgesia and amnesia with retention of protective airway reflexes spontaneous resp and CV activity
What is the cellular action of Ketamine?
ketamine antagonises NMDA an excitory neurotransmitter that transmits pain , perception of pain awareness and surroundings. Ketamine requires glycine and glutamate to open the channel. The channel causes Na+ & Ca++ to enter the cell & K+ to leave . Ketamine blocks the the channel without binding to the glycine or the glutamate receptors. It also decreases the presynaptic release of glutamate and increases the effects of GABBA
