Karius- Motor Control: Reflexes Flashcards
Reflex activity is mediated where?
all levels of CNS
which kind of activity needs consciousness?
volitional activity
what has more rapid onset: volitional or reflex activity?
reflexes
volitonal has a longer onset due to processing
what kind of fibers are primary afferent to m. spindle?
large, Ia fibers, myelinated
what do 1a fibers detect?
length and change in length
what kind of fibers are secondary afferent to m. spindle?
group II, smaller diameter, less myelin
what do 1a fibers innervate?
both nuclear bag and chain
what do group II fibers innervate?
just nuclear chain
what do group II fibers detect?
only length
what do alpha motor neurons innervate?
NMJ- skeletal m.
what do gamma motor neurons innervate?
contractile component of m. spindle via NMJ
which motor neuron directly leads to motion?
alpha
what is gamma motor neuron control?
sensitivity of m. spindle
what initiates a myotactic reflex?
m. spindle, passive stretch of m.
what kind of reflex is myotactic?
monosynaptic
what initiates golgi tendon reflex?
golgi tendon, active contraction of m.
what does golgi tendon reflex cause?
abrupt relaxation of contracted m. to prevent damage
what kind of reflex is golgi tendon?
polysynaptic
what causes spasticity?
damage to cortex that abolishes activation of brainstem to inhibitory region (brain arousal system), increased gamma motor neuron firing
what causes rigidity?
loss of cortical influence that inhibits medullary input to alpha-motorneurons
what does spasticity present as?
pt resists passive stretch of m., no contraction until stretch
what does rigidity present as?
contraction of m. in absence of other stimuli
what does spinal shock present as?
all reflexes abolished, even below transection
what does decorticate posture present as?
internal rotation of legs in extended position, flexed arms
which posture depends on head position?
decorticate
what is the cause of decorticate posture?
loss of cortical input; usually lesion of internal capsule in humans
what does decerebrate posture present as?
contraction of all anti-gravity m.
what causes decerebrate posture?
loss of input to all things rostral to pons
