JVD 2020 #4 Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Microparticles Mixed with Autologous Blood: Application for the Reconstruction of a Large Mandibular Bone Defect in a Dog; Girard Flashcards
In prior combined surgical and regenerative method for reconstruction of critical size mandibular defects in dogs, what was used?
Collagen sponge containing granules of hydroxyapatite (HA) and beta-tricalcium phosphate infused with rhBMP. (Arzi 2015)
What is BCP, biphasic calcium phosphate?
BCP is a combination of hydroxyapatite (HA) and beta-tricalcium phosphate (B-TCP) in the form of ceramic granules or combined with gel-polymers
How does the combination of HA and B-TCP work?
HA is not resorbed and inert, thus provides a structural scaffold. B-TCP is rapidly resorbed, has bioactivity for osteoinduction and promotes tissue regeneration.
What portion of blood was found to be responsible for induction of new bone formation in prior study of clotted whole blood with BCP microparticles?
The mononuclear cell fraction.
What did the CaP biomaterial in BRB consist of?
calibrated 80-200 micrometer microporous microparticles of BCP, composed of 60% HA and 40% B-TCP in a ready-to-use kit
Was any fixation used to adhere the gel form BRB cylinder or clotted composite to the bone ends or plate?
No. It was laid alongside the plate without any rigid fixation to the plate or bone. The surroundign soft tissue were sutured to provide soft tissue cover to the BCP/blood and implant plate.
When was evidence of new bone bridging the interface between the implant material and the adjacent mandibular bone first observed?
At the 4 week-post surgery CBCT.
What are the objectives of bone substitutes?
serve as a substrate for the migration, proliferation and differentiation of cells originating from surrounding tissues, followed by bone ingrowth.
