Joints, Muscles And Movements Of The Elbow Flashcards
What are the bony features on the distal humerus?
2 Condyles: Trochlea and Capitulum,
Medial and lateral epicondyles
Coronoid fossa and olecranon fossa
What are the bony features on proximal radius?
Head of radius, neck, radial tuberosity (attachment site for biceps)
What are the bony features on proximal ulna?
Olecranon, Coronoid process (inserts into coronoid fossa during flexion) Trochlea notch (articulates with Trochlea of humerus) Radial notch (articulates with the head of the radius)
What type of joint is the elbow joint?
Hinge joint that allows flexion and extension
What is the difference between elbow joint complex and proper?
The elbow joint complex is made up of 3 joints (radiohumeral, humeroulnar, radioulnar)
The elbow joint proper is the radiohumeral and humeroulnar which allows flexion and extension only.
What are the main elbow flexors? (3)
Biceps brachii
Brachialis
Brachioradialis
What are the main elblow extensors?
Triceps brachii
Anconeus
What does the annular ligament do?
Surrounds the head of the radius but doesn’t attach to it
How many radioulnar joints are there?
- Proximal and distal
What type of joint is the radioulnar joint?
Pivot joint (distal is a synovial joint)
What movement is allowed at the radioulnar joint?
Rotation around a single axis
What forearm movement does the radioulnar joint allow?
Supination and pronation
What is the interosseous membrane?
A thin flexible ligament that connects the radius and una along their medial borders
What does interossseous membrane do?
Connects the radius and ulna and helps distribute force from the thick, distal end of the radius to the thick, proximal end of the ulna
In anatomical position the hand is pronated/supinated?
Supinated
