Joints-9.2 Synovial Joints Flashcards
What is another name for synovial joint
diarthroses
Describe the synovial joint
surrounded by a joint capsule also called an articular capsule. It has a synovial membrane that contains synovial fluid which helps prevent direct contact between bones.
Synovial fluid contains
proteoglycans
What is the primary function of synovial fluid
- Lubrication
- Nutrient distribution
- Shock absorption
The synovial joint is mobile but relatively weak what accessory structures stabilizes it
▪ Cartilages
– Meniscus—fibrocartilage pad between opposing bones
▪ Fat pads
– Adipose tissue covered by synovial membrane
– Protect articular cartilage
▪ Ligaments
– Support and strengthen joints
– Sprain—ligament with torn collagen fibers
▪ Tendons
– Attach to muscles around joint
▪ Bursae
– Small pockets of synovial fluid
– Cushion areas where tendons or ligaments rub against other tissues
