Joints - 9.1 classification of joints Flashcards
1
Q
What are joints
A
joints are where bones meet
where movement occur
2
Q
What are the classification schemes of joints
A
Structural(anatomy)
Functional (range of motion)
3
Q
What are the structural classification
A
– Fibrous
– Cartilaginous
– Bony
– Synovial
4
Q
What are functional classification?
A
– Synarthrosis (immovable joint)
– Amphiarthrosis (slightly movable joint)
– Diarthrosis (freely movable joint)
5
Q
Describe the synarthrosis joint
A
very strong and may be fibrous or cartilaginous
6
Q
What are the four types of synarthrotic joints and describe them?
A
- Suture - between bones of the skull
- Gomphosis- binds teeth to bony sockets
- Synchondrosis- cartilaginous between vertebrosternal ribs and sternum
- Synostosis- when two bones fuse, epiphyseal line of mature long boned
7
Q
Describe amphiarthrosis
A
more movable than synarthrosis but stronger than a diarthrosis
may be fibrous or cartilaginous
8
Q
What are the two types of amphiarthroses’
A
- Syndesmosis—bones connected by a ligament
- Symphysis—bones connected by fibrocartilage
