Joints Flashcards
2 ways to classify joints
Structure and function
Synovial joints
Bones separated by a joint cavity, lubricated by synovial fluid, enclosed in fibrous joint capsule
3 examples of synovial joints
Shoulder, elbow, carpal joints, hip, knee, tarsal joints, interphalangeal joints
Fibrous joints
Bones held together by collagenous fibers extending from the matrix of one bone into the matrix of the next; no joint cavities
3 examples of fibrous joints
Skull sutures, teeth in sockets, and tibiofibular joints
Cartilaginous joints
Bones held together by cartilage; no joint cavity
3 examples of cartilaginous joints
epiphyseal plates of long bones, intervertebral dicdm and pubic symphysis
Three functional classifications
Diarthroses, amphiarthroses, and synarthroses
Diarthroses
FREELY moveable synovial joints; same thing as the structural synovial joints
3 examples of diarthroses joints
shoulder, elbow, carpal joints, hip, knee, tarsal joints
Amphiarthroses
SLIGHTLY movable joints
3 examples of amphiarthroses
intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis, tibiofibular joints
Synarthroses
Joints with little or NO movement
3 examples of synarthroses
Skull sutures, teeth in sockets, epiphyseal plates of long bones
