Joints Flashcards
End Feels ROM Capsular Patterns
What are the normal end feels?
Soft tissue approx
Muscular or tissue stretch
Capsular stretch or leathery
bony
What is a soft tissue approximation end feel?
Full ROM, restricted by normal tissue bulk
has a feeling of soft compression and is painless
What is muscular or tissue stretch end feel
occurs with extreme muscle stretch
normal tissue stretch has increase tension, springiness or elasticity
assesses for muscle length
what is normal capsular stretch or leathery end feel?
occurs when the joint capsule is stretched at the end of normal range
fells like stretching a piece of leather
What is normal bony end feel?
occurs when the bone contacts bone at the end of normal ROM
end feel is abrupt and hard
what are the abnormal end feels?
Empty
muscle spasm
boggy or soft
springy block/internal derangement
capsular stretch
what is an empty end feel?
Occurs when there is no physical restriction to physical movement and pain is perceived by the client
what is muscle spasm end feel?
~occurs when passive movement stops abruptly and springy rebound and pain are the results of reflective spasm
~indicates synovial inflammation with capsular restriction patterns
What is boggy or soft end feel?
occurs with joint effusion or edna
has a mushy soft quality
What is sparingly block/internal derangement end feel?
Springy or rebound sensation is non-capsular pattern
indicated loose cartilage, meniscal tissue in the joint
what is an abnormal capsular stretch or leathery end feel?
Occurs before normal ROM
indicates capsular fibrosis if restriction is felt with no inflammation
what is abnormal bony end feel?
Occurs before normal ROM indicated bony changes
osteophytes present with degenerative joint disease or malunion of a joint after fracture.
