Joint Classifications Part II Flashcards
What does synovial membrane do?
Secretes synovial fluid for lubrication and nutrient transport
What are capsular ligaments?
Thickenings of the joint capsule that provide additional support (e.g., MCL and LCL in the knee).
What are intracapsular ligaments?
Ligaments inside the joint capsule that restrict movement (e.g., ACL and PCL in the knee).
What are menisci?
Fibrocartilage pads in some synovial joints that act as shock absorbers (e.g., in the knee).
What determines the stability and mobility of a joint?
Bone shape, ligament structure, and body surface contact.
Which type of joint sacrifices stability for mobility?
Synovial joints, especially ball & socket joints like the shoulder, elbow etc.
What are the 3 movement axes in synovial joints?
Uniaxial (one axis), biaxial (two axes) & multiaxial (many axes).
What type of movement occurs in a hinge joint?
Flexion and extension (e.g., elbow, knee).
