Joint Classifications Flashcards
What are the three main types of joints?
Fibrous, cartilaginous, and synovial.
Which type of joint allows the least movement?
Fibrous joints.
Which type of joint allows the most movement?
Synovial joints.
What type of tissue holds fibrous joints together?
Dense fibrous connective tissue (DFCT).
What is an example of a fibrous joint?
Cranial sutures or the distal tibiofibular joint.
What type of tissue holds cartilaginous joints together?
Fibrocartilage.
What is an example of a cartilaginous joint?
Intervertebral discs or the pubic symphysis.
What are the key features of synovial joints?
Joint cavity, articular cartilage, synovial fluid, joint capsule, ligaments.
What is the function of hyaline cartilage in synovial joints?
Provides smooth, frictionless movement by covering bone ends.
What is the function of the joint capsule?
Holds bones together, with an outer DFCT layer and an inner synovial membrane.
