Jeppesen Oral- Chapter 7 (Aircraft Structural Materials) Flashcards
Thermosetting doesn’t soften when heated and chars or burns rather then melting Thermoplastic becomes soft and pliable when heated and hardened when cooled
Plexiglass is thermoplastic resin used for windows and windsheild Thermosetting resins are used as a matrix in composite materials
Epoxy or polyester
fiberglass, aramid, ceramic, carbon,
It becomes brittle and loses its ductility
Correct ratio/ mixture of resin matrix
Heat the steel structure to a temperature above its critical temperature and allow it to cool in still air.
When steel is hardened, it becomes brittle and tempering removes some of this brittleness.
The aluminum is heated in an oven to the proper temperature for a specified time; then it is removed and quenched in water.
After a piece of aluminum has been solution heat-treated, it is held at a specified elevated temperature for a period of time. Precipitation heat treating is also called artificial aging.
By cold working the metal.
It may become brittle and lose ductility in the area of the weld.
The bead width should be 3 to 5 times the thickness of the base metal and there must be 100% penetration.
A cold weld has rough, irregular edges that are not feathered into the base metal and has variations in penetration amounts.
25 to 30 percent.
